A bad date. A conversation that should have ended five minutes ago. An uncomfortable walk past a stranger in a seedy place. We've all needed an excuse to get out of a bad situation... yet coming up with an excuse off the top of your head can be difficult. There is one fool-proof excuse that always works – a phone call. But unless you scheduled it ahead of time, you're kinda SOL.
Phoney lets you create a set of fake contacts from which you can instantly trigger an incoming phone call – no need to schedule it ahead of time. The phone call is fake, but it looks real.
Now all you have to do is say "Excuse me, I have to take this..." and you're free!
Tap on the (+) button at the top of the list to open the contact editor screen. If you have contacts added, you may need to scroll up to see the button. To set up a contact you must add something to the name field (this could be a name, phone number – anything), a photo, and set a Voiceback type and ringtone type.
During a call, a male or female voice will talk to you, depending on what you specified when you set up the contact. The voice recording is a neutral banter meant to fit into any type of conversation you have. The voice will play random phrases and responses and pause when you talk to create a more natural back-and-forth and helps fool anybody nearby that you are trying to convince.
At any point during an incoming or active call, you can swipe down on the screen to pause the current call and see your contacts list. Swipe back up on the call screen to resume the current call.
To edit an existing contact, swipe left on the contact tile. To delete, swipe right.
The call simulation is meant to be as realistic as possible so as to fool anybody who may see or hear you while on the call. Tapping on the "decline" or "hangup" buttons will close the app to match the native iOS Phone app behavior. Opening Phoney will take you back to your contacts list.
